Day tour of Fatima and Santiago de Compostela (from Lisbon)

An entire day dedicated to the catholic faith. (Religious tours)

Heading north from Lisbon we reach Fatima where we’ll visit the famous Shrine. It is one of the largest pilgrimage centers in the world, built around the place where, in 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherds. After visiting the Basilica where the three seers are buried, the chapel of apparitions and the modern Church of the Holy Trinity, we will have some free time to pray or attend mass celebration (optional). Shortly afterwards, the tour goes to Valinhos, the small village where the three young shepherds were born, and we will visit their homes, having the chance to see what the region’s houses looked like at the beginning of the XX century.

400 kilometers north we reach another amazing religious area where we’ll visit the sumptuous and impressive cathedral of St. James of Compostela, one of the most important pilgrimage places in the world. Here you can witness the medieval streets packed of pilgrims who have just arrived on foot or by bicycle. Free time to visit the city’s historic district, the 11th-century Cathedral and the tomb of Apostle Santiago Zebedee (Saint James of Compostela).

Whether you choose a single-day or a multi-day tour, you will always be driven in the comfort of our Mercedes-Benz vehicles and escorted by our certified professional driver-guides.

The famous Marian Sanctuary of Fatima is without a doubt one of the most important pilgrimage centers in the world. Millions of people come here annually to pay homage to the three shepherd children who witnessed the apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the fields of “Cova da Iria”. Free time to attend Mass services (optional), visit the Chapel of the Apparitions where you can see the image of the Virgin Mary. We will also visit the Basilica where we can find the tombs of Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco (the last two canonized by Pope Francis on May 2017, becoming the youngest saints of the Catholic Church). As we continue, we will visit the modern church of the Blessed Trinity of Fatima, seating 8,633 people and with an area of 40,000 m2 (450,000 ft2). The church was designed and projected by the Greek architect, Alexandros Tombazis. Time allowed for religious shopping (optional).

We next head to the village where the three shepherd children, Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, were born and lived. Visit their family’s limestone built homes, part of an old community, in what used to be a poor area in the interior of Portugal, but nonetheless of great beauty and character.

Time to taste the famous “leitao da Bairrada” (suckling piglet cooked on wood fired oven) at one of the many local restaurants (optional). This is one of the most typical and celebrated dishes of Portuguese cuisine. Of course, there is a variety of other choices in the region for your lunch if you so desire.

Santiago de Compostela, the Galician city located in northeastern Spain, became the major center of pilgrimage in Europe, supplanting Jerusalem, after the mortal remains of the Apostle St. James were found in the 9th century. Here we will have time to visit the 11th century Cathedral and the tomb of the Apostle of Christ. Walking tour of the historic area of the city.
