About "Palmela, Azeitao, Sesimbra, Arrabida and Setubal" tour

This tour combines stunning landscapes and intense flavours in a still rural region, sought after by creamy cheeses and prestigious wines. Palmela is the first stop of the tour. We will visit Pamela’s castle touching the sky, with a breathtaking view. Right next door is Azeitão, a small village in the heart of Arrábida Natural Park, marked by a landscape of olive trees, vineyards and cork oaks. At this stage of the tour enjoy the taste of Azeitão cheese, the Azeitão Pie and the visit to the historic José Maria da Fonseca Cellars that produce Periquita, Moscatel and 40 other brands.

The tour continues towards Sesimbra, a fishermen’s land, with magical alleys. But the best of the ride is yet to come… crossing the Serra da Arrábida, where the green of the mountain and the blue of the ocean meander in our eyes. Finally, we will arrive at Setúbal, bathed by the only river in Portugal that flows from south to north, the river Sado. In the distance, we will see the wonderful beach of Troia.

This single-day tour is always supported by the comfort of our Mercedes-Benz vehicles, driven by a private driver.

Palmela, Azeitao, Sesimbra, Arrabida and Setubal Tour - Itinerary

Palmela

Currently known for being part of the wine region of the Peninsula of Setubal, this old Moorish city is a beautiful attraction mainly because of its whitewashed houses. It’s splendor is also dominated by the strategic medieval castle situated on its highest hill. It was conquered by King Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal in 1147 and given to the Military Order of Santiago de Espada. We will visit the castle from where we can see the cities of Setubal and Lisbon.

Azeitão

The village of Azeitão is superbly known in Portugal for various reasons, namely: cheese, wine and “tortas de Azeitão”, a delicate and delicious pastry. It is here that we will visit one of the oldest wine cellars in Portugal, José Maria da Fonseca (optional), where we can taste the celebrated Periquita wine and “Moscatel” a worldwide known fortified wine. Time also to taste the famous cheese of Azeitão, for many the best cheese in Portugal. And of course, you can also try the local pastries and sweets, including “tortas de Azeitão”.

Sesimbra

This old fishing village is pleasantly located between mountains with the Atlantic as its background. It is here that we’ll explore the narrow streets that sheltered the homes of the people that made fishing their way of life. Today, Sesimbra which is almost totally geared towards commerce and tourism, still houses an important fishing fleet in its new and modern harbor.

Almoço

If you want to have lunch, your guide can recommend restaurants in Sesimbra for your meal.

Arrábida

The Arrabida mountain range belongs to the protected region of Arrabida’s Natural Park. From the viewpoints located 500 meters above sea level, we will observe the amazing landscapes whose natural beauty will remain in our memory forever! It is also from here, that we can see the largest extension of beaches in Portugal. With an astonishing 45 kilometers in length, Troia is recognized as the third largest beach in the world!

Setúbal

Setubal is the capital city of this region. It is washed by the only river in Portugal that flows from south to north, the River Sado. This city developed immensely during the Roman Era due to the production of salt and the technique of salting fish. It was here that one of the most appreciated condiments of Ancient Greece and Rome was produced, “the Garum”. Free time to walk in the central shopping streets of Setubal. We will return to Lisbon via “25 de Abril Bridge”, over the River Tagus.
