Additionally, your guide will share tales of the Age of Discoveries, highlighting how Lisbon played a pivotal role in global exploration and trade.

Modern Wonders: Park of Nations

Your journey begins in Parque das Nações, Lisbon’s newest district. Developed for the 1998 World Expo, this riverside area showcases cutting-edge architecture, landscaped promenades, and public art. As you stroll along the waterfront, don’t miss the Oceanário de Lisboa, one of the largest aquariums in Europe, where you can observe a diverse range of marine life. It’s a striking contrast to the historic quarters that await, illustrating how Lisbon beautifully fuses tradition with modernity.

Timeless Charm: Alfama and Fado

Next, explore Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood. Walk through narrow alleyways lined with traditional tilework, hear the soulful sounds of fado, and feel the essence of old Lisbon. Alfama’s Moorish influence and authentic atmosphere offer a glimpse into the city’s origins. As you wander, you may stumble upon local artists showcasing their crafts in charming squares, and perhaps enjoy a meal at a family-run restaurant where you can savor traditional dishes like Bacalhau a Bras.

Iconic Lisbon: Baixa, Rossio & Avenida da Liberdade

Visit the elegant Baixa Pombalina, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Stroll through Praça do Rossio, where you can admire the intricate wave-patterned pavement and perhaps grab a coffee at one of the historic cafés. Then continue along Avenida da Liberdade, a grand boulevard lined with historic buildings, luxury shops, and classic cafés. This area is perfect for people-watching and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the city.

Stunning Views from Eduardo VII Park

From Eduardo VII Park, take in a panoramic view of Lisbon and the shimmering Tagus River. This scenic stop highlights the city’s unique light and natural beauty—perfect for photos and quiet reflection. The park is also home to the Estufa Fria, a beautiful greenhouse filled with exotic plants, which adds to the serene ambiance of this urban retreat.

South Bank Adventure: 25th of April Bridge & Cristo Rei

Cross the iconic 25th of April Bridge to reach Lisbon’s south bank. Here, a visit to the Cristo Rei statue offers one of the best viewpoints in Lisbon, with the entire city laid out below. This statue, inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, symbolizes peace and provides a stunning backdrop for unforgettable photos. The surrounding area also features parks and walking paths that enhance your experience.

Belem: Maritime Glory and Sweet Delights

Continue to Belem, where Portugal’s Age of Discoveries comes alive. Marvel at the stunning Jeronimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic examples of Manueline architecture in the world. The monastery’s intricate details reflect the wealth of the discoveries era, and you can explore its magnificent cloisters and impressive church. Nearby, visit the impressive Tower of Belem and  Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), a tribute to Portugal’s legendary explorers who helped shape global history during the 15th and 16th centuries. Each site tells a story of adventure and innovation.

Don’t miss the opportunity to taste the world-famous Pastel de Belem, served warm and fresh from the original bakery that has preserved the recipe since 1837. This delectable custard tart is a must-try, with its flaky pastry and creamy filling. Enjoy it at a lovely café while soaking in the local atmosphere, and perhaps pair it with a strong Portuguese coffee for the perfect afternoon treat.

Itinerary:

Expo 98- Park of Nations

Expo98 is where the 1998 World Fair took place, nowadays called “Parque das Nacoes”, it is the most recent district/quarter of the city of Lisbon where you can admire some marvels of modern architecture (Vasco da Gama Bridge, the Oriente Train Station, the building towers of Sao Gabriel and Sao Rafael, Vasco da Gama Shopping Center, among others). Stops for photos and a visit to the Oceanarium (optional) voted by Tripadvisor the best aquarium in Europe.

Alfama

The oldest quarter of Lisbon dates back to the time of the Moors’ presence in the city (8th to 12th centuries). The panorama views from the famous “miradouros” of Santa Luzia and Senhora do Monte are a must-stop on our tour, where you can contemplate the wonderful sights of the Tagus River and of the city. We will explore the narrow cobblestone alleys and streets where the facades of traditional houses are covered with beautiful tiles, an Arabian heritage in the Iberian Peninsula. Also, it is here that ” Fado “, the Portuguese national song was born. Two other places of interest are, the Lisbon Cathedral (built-in 1448) and the Church of St. Anthony, patron saint of lost causes and weddings, (built on the site where the saint was born). Visit the Castle of São Jorge (optional) conquered by Dom Afonso Henriques (the first king of Portugal) from the Moors in 1147.

Baixa Pombalina

In 1755, Lisbon was the site of the biggest earthquake ever recorded in Europe. The Marquis of Pombal, prime-minister at the time, took on the mission to rebuild the city center, completely ruined and devastated by the catastrophe. And as such, the first modern style European city in Europe was born: “Baixa Pombalina” with its urban and geometric architectural plan (grid), became the model used in the construction of other new cities, especially in the New World (for example Manhattan in New York, Chicago city center, etc.) Here we will visit the famous squares “Praca do Comercio” and “Rossio” (statue of the First Emperor of Brazil, D. Pedro I), Rua Augusta (the most important pedestrian street in Portugal, with its famous Arch of Triumph.

Parque Eduardo VII

On our way to Park Eduard VII, we will drive through “Avenida da Liberdade”, Lisbon’s Champs d’Elysees, one of the most beautiful boulevards in the world. Besides the unique green vegetation, it is also famous for its national and international brand name shops, a paradise for glamorous shopping sprees. We will pass by the most imposing monument in Lisbon, a tribute to one of Portugal’s greatest national heroes, the Marquis de Pombal. As we arrive at the top of “Parque Eduardo VII”, we can admire the wonderful view of the city and the Tagus River.

25 April Bridge and Cristo Rei Monument

Inaugurated in 1966, the 25 April Bridge has become a major landmark of the city of Lisbon and a welcome sight for all visitors. The bridge connects the two margins of the Tagus River and it is one of the most imposing suspended cable bridges in all the world.

The statue of “Cristo Rei” was inaugurated in 1959 and it’s a national sanctuary. It is a place of pilgrimage and welcomes thousands of Christians every year. Also, due to its privileged location, the overview is about two hundred meters (600 ft) above the water level and the panoramic scenery is one of the most spectacular overlooking the city of Lisbon. This fact attracts millions of tourists annually.

Belem

Belem is the district of Lisbon dedicated to the great Portuguese explorers of the 15th and 16th centuries. Portugal was the first globalizing nation in the world, with the arrival of its explorers to all continents. The Portuguese empire became one of the largest in the history of humanity. The majestic monuments that we find here are a reflection of the golden era in the history of Portugal: Jeronimos monastery, Tower of Belem, and the Monument of Discoveries with the statues of the great Portuguese sailors and explorers, Magellan, Vasco da Gama among others. Finally, there is a must-visit to the famous “Pasteis de Belem”, one of Portugal´s most typical pastries/sweets.

Chiado and Bairro Alto

The bohemian quarter of Chiado was devastated by a terrible fire in 1988 and was the object of a careful reconstruction project led by Portuguese architect Siza Vieira. It is, without a doubt, the busiest district in Lisbon. It is here that the streets “Rua do Carmo” and “Rua Garrett”, where we can find Café “A Brasileira” (with a statue of the Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa, a regular client of this café in the late 19 century), come alive every day! Also, located in this quarter are some of the most famous and international renown restaurants in Portugal, for example, “Restaurante Belcanto” of Chef José Avillez, award winner of “Best restaurant in the world” by Conde Nast Traveler in 2016.

“Bairro Alto”, is named as such because it is located in one of the seven hills of Lisbon. It is an old quarter dated back to the 16th century and has become a local favorite among the “Alfacinhas” (a name given to the native people of Lisbon) where they can enjoy Lisbon’s nightlife. Its countless bars, restaurants, and “Fado houses”, attract people of all ages, social classes and ethnic backgrounds, with a cosmopolitan ambience and a touch of medieval charm!
