Tomar Knights Templar and Coimbra private tour
The highlights of this tour are the University of Coimbra and the mystical Knights Templar Castle in Tomar.
Our first visit is Tomar, with its charming historical center on the banks of the Nabao River, followed by the magical Convent of Christ (Knights Templar castle), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its 8 different cloisters, the famous “Manueline Window”, and the round church inspired on the temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. Here we unveil some of the secrets of the Knights Templar, we’ll learn about the extinction of the order and its succession as the Order of Christ in Portugal.
Stop for lunch at Mealhada to taste the famous wood fired oven cooked suckling piglet (optional).
Located in the center region of the country, Coimbra, the “City of Knowledge”, was the capital of Portugal until 1255. From the banks of the Mondego river to the University hill, the city of Coimbra is intellectual, peculiar, full of mysticism but also burlesque and picturesque. Here we will visit the Joanine library considered by the British newspaper “The Telegraph” the most spectacular library in the world.
